The Croatian National Tourist Board tagline for Croatia is, “The Mediterranean as It Once Was,” and we couldn’t agree more. If you are considering a European honeymoon getaway and haven’t been considering Croatia. Think again. National Geographic Adventure chose Croatia as the number one “Hot Adventure Destination” in 2006 and Lonely Planet picked Croatia as the official staffers’ choice destination for 2005.

The newly independent Croatia’s thriving tourist industry was interrupted by war in the early 1990’s but has swept back in force, and visitors are flocking to Croatia’s string of coastal and island resorts. With 1,110 miles of coastline along the Adriatic Sea – and up to 1,200 islands to explore, Croatia is the new choice for American honeymoon travelers, proving there is far more to the Mediterranean than Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal.

The “pearl of the Adriatic” was how Lord Byron described the medieval, walled city of Dubrovnik - an easy choice for honeymoon travelers seeking metropolitan romance among limestone streets and majestic buildings. The entire city is proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site. Although summer is peak season, it still draws far less than other parts of Europe swarming with summer touring masses.

Among our must see Croatia locations are Dubrovnik, Zegreb, Platak – for all you winter honeymooners that love spring skiing conditions and truffle season, Split, Island of Brac, the waterfalls of Plitvice (near Senj), even near by Montenegro.

Why You’ll Love It
Croatia is the perfect honeymoon choice for the metro man seeking an exotic destination that combines natural beauty, rich history and culture. If Croatia party boys are successful, this Country may just surpass the Spanish island of Ibiza as the party capital of the world. Hike, sail, tennis, sip espresso and "people" watch, lounge sea side at East Side West Beach Club in Dubrovnik (for more "people" watching) or dance at Carpe Diem through dawn.
Why She’ll Love It
Fortresses, castles, creamy stone houses, and ancient churches are part of Croatia's Renaissance charm. Croatia's scenary is equally dramatic in the interior as the Coast. If she's a metro girl, and she's ever longed for a version of Tuscany or Rome without the swarming tourist masses, she'll love a romantic Croatia honeymoon.
Get to Know Croatia

Not to be a buzz kill, but some remote areas of Croatia, even though safe and welcoming, remain uncleared of landmines. These include the Danube region in eastern Slavonia and some parts of the Krajina. It is unwise to stray into fields or abandoned villages.

Best Booze

Just across the Adriatic from Italy, it's no surprise that Croatia produces some fine wines. Look for wines from Primosten - one of the top vineyards in the area along the Sibenik coastline.

We'd be remiss if we didn't also mention the lozovaca - like Italian grappa, or the beer.
