Destinations: Italy: Italy's Islands
Details
After mankind discovered that wood could float, he was met with the overwhelming urge to dominate the Mediterranean Islands of Italy: Sicily and Sardinia. In fact, it is said that any nation with a navy has invaded at least one of these islands (and that counts the U.S.). It is easier to count the nations that haven’t inhabited these islands, I can’t think of any right now, but you get the idea. If you both love ancient history, mythology, majestic mountains (Mt. Etna), archeology, and romantic beaches, Sicily or Sardinia are great honeymoon options. Sicily is said to be Europe, Africa and Asia on one island with a diviersity of culture to match its history of occupation. Both islands claim bragging rights to 30 centuries of history - classical, romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque.
For you, this is very easy. Whether you choose Sardinia or Sicily you'll have lots of options for adventure, outdoors, sightseeing, shopping and sports including mountain biking, sailing, and golf. Pristine, immaculate beaches abound. And, with the fresh seafood only an Italian island location can deliver, Sicily and Sardinia are also a great picks for foodies and wine aficionados alike. Plus, everyone takes a nap from 1-4 so you'll have a daily excuse to stay in your hotel room.
Sicily and Sardinia are good options for the demanding female honeymooner. After all, what's good enough for Liz Taylor and Richard Burton is well, frankly, just perfect for the two of you. Soak in the sun, stand in awe of the history and architecture, go to a real Italian opera, or enjoy your once-in-lifetime romantic dinner at Wunderbar. Shop, eat and drink your way through either island or take to the outdoors and hike Europe's most active volanco. A Sicily or Sardinia honeymoon will be the trip of a lifetime.
Get to Know Italy's Islands
Mt. Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, but it has only killed two people in the last century. It’s like tight rope walking with a net; you can feel like a badass without the actual fear of death. If hiking and lava aren’t your thing, you can check out the ruins. The ruins are everywhere and make you feel like you did something productive on your honeymoon, besides spending a ton of money and eating your weight in pasta.
Best Booze
Definitely wine. If you don’t like wine, perhaps go to Mexico or even Hawaii. If you choose Sicily or Sardinia, you have to try the Marsala.
