My fiance really wants to go all out for our honeymoon, but I just can’t afford it. How can I make her happy, without going into debt?

Of course she wants to go all out for your honeymoon—and let’s be honest, so do you. The difference is that while she’s looking at this as a dream vacation, you’re dealing in dollar signs, probably more concerned about what kind of budget you have to work with.

The good news is that there are many ways around the money issue. One idea is to cut your honeymoon short by a couple of days. If you plan far enough in advance, you can finally use those miles or credit card points you’ve been holding on to, so you’re at least saving on airfare. When deciding on destinations, maybe pick spots during their off season. Or, look for great deals on five-star destinations mid-week, so you can stay in a nice place Monday-Thursday, for half the cost.

Rather than budget-hunting for your honeymoon though, my suggestion is to go mid-range for most of your trip, and then wrap it up with a two or three night stay at a first class place. If you tell the mid-level hotel that you’re on your honeymoon, they might give you one of their nicer rooms, which may still be more high-end than you’re used to. Then, you can end the trip with your splurge, satisfying her fancy taste, without destroying your credit.
